I managed to build the charge controller (to check the charging process), the Low Voltage Disconnect (to check the discharge process), and encase them so that it looks good. Wiring everything, so that it doesn't burn when it is ON, was a challenge by itself. By the way, both charge controller and LVD are using the same board made my Glen. The calibration process is a little bit akward for the LVD but once you have everything set, it works just great. The 4 batteries (12V 7Ah) terminals are connected in parallel with the same cable lenght. I read somewhere on the web that it was the best configuration to have a well balanced charge and discharge process as far as batteries voltage are concerned. The next step is to improve my wind turbine. It should be able to keep the batteries charged enough to run the inverter at the same time. After that I would get good batteries and test everything together.

This step would have been to build a microcontroller -based Charge Controller for my battery bank using a LM3S811 evaluation board that I already have. Instead, Glen hurd, a veteran of RE had a track proven, really cheap and easy to understand controller that I fell in love with. Beside, let's not reinvent the wheel ! It only cost 15 bucks (check it out at ghurd.info and you get great technical support along. I used it and there it is; Working. Will keep you posted

A Solar Charge Regulator aka Controller acts as voltage regulator allowing batteries to charge without overcharging. 7 amp hours at 12 volt = 12 watts of continuous usage for 7 hours OR 7x12 = 84 watts for ONE hour. 7 amps of current at 12 volt is 84 watts. Most regulators figure somewhere between the charging battery voltage and the open voltage or right at the top of a fully charged battery. 7 amps x 14 volts (fully charged battery) = 98 watts rounded to 100 watt MAX! Some older batteries that are in poor condition, like the one I am using in this video, draws current less effectively, this is why it is only receiving 38 watts. Also, the wiring is not proper for a real installation and the panel is not at the optimal angle to the sun, this is just to show you what a "Charge Regulator" does. It is easy to forget!!!!! I had toxic gas smelling up my yard from a smoking battery I hooked direct in the morning and by 12 noon it was destroyed! Dangerous and stupid, BY A CHARGE REGULATOR! A fully charged 12 volt battery is 12.6 - 12.8 volts at rest and 13.6 - 14.0 volts while charging.
